Green Planet Catering Blog - Green Planet Starts a Production Farm: Memorial Day Miracle

May 25, 2009

After a tough, rainless week of weeding, building, and working our full-time jobs we were all exhausted when we started farming today. Tons of weeding, scuffling, and raking were just tiring us out even more and the only highlight was some much needed rain.  We saw a few hawks hovering around and after stopping to admire them we quickly realized they were about to come down on the chickens enjoying the free range lifestyle. We needed a break.

40's
It was 40 time!

After returning to work we had a visitor. His name was Dwight Whitley and he owned some land just up the road on the other side of Hwy 64. John turned on the country and jumped in Dwight's car to go get some pointers about the land. He found out several useful things like where a close enough spring was to pump water, that Dwight owned a tractor, and that Dwight wanted to help us. After Dwight left John told us that he was going to come weed, turn, and re-mound our rows. We didn't realize he was coming RIGHT back.

Mr Mikinely tractor

A classic 1953 Farmall Tractor. Sweet!
When you are putting together a farm in the style we are, you really understand what a hard days work is. We've been weeding and hand tilling land for weeks and only have a portion of the land prepped. When we were donated some tractor time it cut about a month of labor out for us. We lost some small portions of crop because he had to drive over them but it was well worth it. Thanks Tom Cruise for the rain AND tractor!
weeding rows
Hand scuffling would have cost us about 30 hours of back breaking work for these 5 long rows.
It took Mr Whitley about 10 minutes. He was a serious lift and a lifesaver!
